Report by Sydney Brown, pictures by Chris Hellier
The 14th Northern Ferrari Day was held on Sunday 13th July at Vale Royal Abbey, a delightful former Cistercian Monastery, dating back to the 13th Century, situated in the heart of rural Cheshire.
After overnight rain, the day dawned dry and bright. The concours display area was a large circular lawn, to the rear of the abbey, which was adequate to accommodate the entrants, with non-entered Ferraris parked in a large semi-circle opposite.
Our event marshals, Chris Hellier and Andrew Stockton were on site early to ensure that every Ferrari was efficiently directed to its parking location. Concours competitors were entered in one of seven classes, representing tipi from the 1960’s to the present day.
Our sponsors were sited adjacent, with a delectable line up of cars.
We were particularly pleased to welcome Club members representing area groups in the North East, Yorkshire, East Midlands, West Midlands, Lakeland and Anglia.
Concours judging commenced promptly at 11am with our main judges, Tony Richardson, Jim Robinson, Brian Booth and Norman Tooley, joined by two of our previous-year concours class winners, Jonathan Paxton and Gary Burgess, anxious to learn the ins and outs of concours appraisal.
Of the 76 Ferraris present, 27 were entered in the concours. Judging completed, 92 diners took their places in the Great Hall for an excellent three-course lunch at 1.30pm, whereafter the presentation of awards commenced.
Colin and Barbara O’Loughlin, who are the event organisers, briefly thanked members for their attendance, the marshals for their direction, the judges for their diligence and the sponsors for their support, before awarding the appropriate trophies together with an engraved glass memento to all concours entrants.
